Hi, I’m Layla Blackwell
I’m an ICF accredited Disability Empowerment coach. Through Layla BE Coaching, I help people with physical disabilities build resilience, confidence, and freedom — so they can live on their own terms.
Bravery. It’s often defined as 'courageous behaviour or character.' For me, it’s been a lifelong practice.
I was born prematurely in November 1987, weighing no more than a bag of sugar, and wasn’t expected to survive. At age two, I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Those facts shaped my life — but they don’t make me brave.
Growing up with disabilities meant I was surrounded by professionals and a protective mum, all telling me what I wanted, thought, and felt. I became a people-pleaser, cautious and fearful of a world that wasn’t designed for me.
But the moments that changed my life all came from facing my fears head-on.
At 21, I joined a writers’ group determined to get published. Their honesty and support helped me practice my craft, and eventually, I saw my first piece in print.
At 28, I used just three seconds of courage to roll through the doors of a women’s wheelchair basketball club. That single choice changed everything. I discovered that disability wasn’t just something to 'overcome' — it could be a point of pride. I found my voice, my strength, and a community that showed me I was capable of more than I ever believed.
Since then, I’ve become a published journalist, an advocate, and now a certified ICF life coach.
Through Layla BE Coaching, I use my life experience and training to help others with physical disabilities build resilience, confidence, and freedom. Because I know what it feels like to be underestimated — and I know the power of proving yourself wrong.
